VALADE, Lorne – Mr. Lorne Joseph Valade passed away peacefully at Hospice Cornwall on Sunday May 1, 2016 with his family by his side, after a short battle with cancer at the age of 87 years. Beloved husband of 63 years to Jessie (née Seymour) Valade. Loving father of Larry (Sherry), Janice, Steven and Peter (Darlene). Cherished grandfather of 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Dear brother of James (late Frances). BÉLANGER, J.C. René C.D., SSM (Alert) –After a short battle with cancer, passed away on Friday April 29, 2016 at the age of 73. JARVIS, William Herbert, P.C., Q.C. August 15, 1930 to April 27, 2016. Cornwall, Ontario.Born in Hamilton, Ontario, son of the late Garfield Jarvis and the late Nina McBean Jarvis. Survived by his wife Louisette (Morissette) Jarvis and her sister Louise Morissette, daughter Elizabeth of Victoria, B.C. and son Richard and his wife Deb of Kitchener, their mother Vivian Jarvis of Stratford, grand-daughter Courtney and husband Trevor Thompson of Toronto, and grandson William Luke of Waterloo. Loving stepfather of Christine Morissette and great-grandfather of Frederick Thompson. He attended London Central Collegiate Institute and was appointed as a Naval Cadet (UNTD) RCN(R) and served on HCMS Prevost for UNTD 1949-1951. He graduated from University of Western Ontario with a BA in the spring of 1953, where he was a member of the Kappa Alpha Society. Graduated with a LLB in 1962 and admitted to the bar in 1964. Practiced as a lawyer in Stratford, from 1964-1972. He was elected as MP for the riding of Perth-Wilmot, serving from 1972 to 1984. He was appointed Minister of State for Federal-Provincial Relations in the Clark government of 1979-1980. He retired from politics in 1984 and served as President of the Progressive Conservative Party for 4 years before joining the law firm of McCarthy Tétrault in an advisory capacity. ALGUIRE, Heidi - Heidi Alguire passed away at the Glengarry Memorial Hospital on Sunday, April 24, 2016 at the age of 56 years. Loved daughter of the late Larry and Eleanor Alguire. D'ALESSIO, Donald - Mr. Donald Augustine D'Alessio passed away on Thursday, April 28, 2016 after a long battle with cancer at the age of 67 years. Soul mate and sunshine to Monique (née Campeau). Admired father of Lisa (Tim) and Steven (Angele). Proud Poppa to Andrew, Brayden, Marissa and Chale. Beloved brother to Angela Kehoe and Marlene Perreault. Predeceased by his parents Augustino and Rose and brother Norman. In his early years, Don worked for GTE Sylvania then continued to TCF (BCL) and retired at Kraft foods. He enjoyed working in instrumentation/electrical and excelled in his field. He started many business ventures such as Augustino's Restaurant etc. and finally volunteering his time as President of ANAF. He was recognized for his numerous achievements-awards throughout his life. All who knew Don were touched by his kind and compassionate nature. Don and Monique were high school sweethearts and together for over 52 years. Don was a unique man that will be sadly missed and never forgotten. LAFAVE, Roland "Grassy" - Korean War Veteran - Passed away at the Cornwall Community Hospital, McConnell Site, on April 28, 2016. Roland was born on November 21, 1928. In 1952, he married the late Veronica Taillon, together they raised their son Larry. Roland was an honoured veteran having served in Korea and was also stationed in Hawaii and Japan. BOVA, Wilfred W. “Sonkawekanhonsta” - 78, of 1075 Island Road, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday afternoon, April 26, 2016 at the Ottawa Heart Institute. Wilfred was born June 21, 1937 in Akwesasne, Ontario, son of the late James and Julia Boots Bova. He attended Cornwall Island East End School and then Cornwall Island West End, and St. Lawrence High School. He married Mary B. Leaf on January 5, 1963 in St. Regis, Quebec. She predeceased him on January 18, 2007. Wilfred was an Ironworker, Local #60, Syracuse, and when he was younger he worked various jobs with Seaway in Cornwall and did an apprenticeship as a carpenter’s helper. He was a communicant of the St. Regis Catholic Church and enjoyed watching sports, especially lacrosse and was an avid NHL fan. He is survived by his children, Terri Bova of Akwesasne; Wesley Bova and his fiancé Ashima Mehra of Thunder Bay, ON; and Taylor James and Patti Bova of Akwesasne, ON; and his grandchildren, Cheyenne, Ciara, Karonhiakwas, Ranerahtenhtha, Chase, and Isla; his sister, Hilda Smoke of Akwesasne, and many nieces and nephews. Wilfred was predeceased by his daughter, Valerie Marie Bova on September 24, 1983; a grandson, David John Lacey II; a sister, Nancy Chaussi on April 10, 2009; and two brothers, Arthur Bova on September 4, 2013, and Percy Francis on July 29, 2012. Friends may call at the family home beginning Saturday at 2:00 PM until 8:30 AM Monday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Regis Catholic Church at 10:00 AM with Rev. GOSSELIN, Leonard Emile - February 25, 1932 - April 25, 2016 It is with great sadness that the family announces the sudden death of our dear father, Leonard, at Trent Valley Lodge, in his 84th year. Loving and devoted husband to the late Shirley. Father of Eric (deceased), and daughters Jennifer and Carolyn. Special father-in-law to Robin. Proud grandfather of Alexander, Gabrielle, Kathleen and Siobhan. Son of the late Joseph Emile Gosselin and Minnie Gregory. Dear brother to Jean McCosham and the late Joyce Sproul. Leonard started his working life with the RCAF as radio mechanic. He served overseas for several years until he retired to civilian life in Cornwall, ON where he started a family. Leonard later joined Alcan Inc. in Toronto where he worked through to his retirement. Len took great pleasure in walking through Presqu’ile Provincial Park, working in the garden, woodworking and spending time with his beloved Shirley, the love of his life. We wish to extend our sincere thanks to the many friends, wonderful neighbours and caregivers for their tireless support over the years. Mom, Dad and Eric, you are all together now in Heaven. LeGAULT, Lydia (née Richard) – Mrs. Lydia LeGault at St Joseph’s Continuing Care Centre, Cornwall, following a prolonged struggle with dementia on Thursday April 21, 2016 at the age of 93 years. Born December 5, 1922, in Moncton, NB, she was the daughter of the late Edmond Blair and Edna (LeBlanc) Richard. Predeceased by her beloved husband Keith, her sisters Mae and Doris, and her brothers Ed and George. Lovingly remembered by her children Kathi (Gerry Dobbyn), Joanie (Bruce Mann), and Brian (Cindy), by her grandchildren, Jennifer and Alexander Mann, Meghan Roth and Nathan LeGault-Roth, Lindsay, Chelsea and Brock LeGault, her great grandchildren, Niko, Logan, Emma Joan, Molly Irene, and Chloe. Also survived by two step-granddaughters, Barbara and Alison Mann, their children, Liam, Eloise and Lillian and by several nieces, nephews and God-children. Lydia left New Brunswick to study nursing at the Hotel Dieu in Cornwall. Nursing was Lydia’s vocation, and through nursing she made lifelong friends. She was a master points bridge player, she loved the game and her friends in the bridge community. Cottage life on Stanley Island was truly special to Lydia, and this too was a place where lifelong friendships were made. Winters she and Keith shushed the slopes at Moon Valley and Jay Peak. Her travels brought her to destinations throughout Canada, the US, Mexico, the British Isles, Europe, the Holy Land, the highlight being trips to Oberammergau for the Passion Play. Despite having lived in Cornwall since 1947, Lydia remained a lobster lover and true Maritimer at heart. The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the staff at St Joseph’s Continuing Care, in particular the girls on McNeil, for their loving care. Cremation has taken place. The girls grew up in the comfort and support of Grandmother Mary Jane, and loving aunts Mary Tobin, Mary Katharine and Mary Augusta. Helen was dearly loved by her extended family of 13 grandchildren - Krista, Lynn, Erika, Rebecca, David, Taylor, Bryson, Alexander, Christopher, Matthew, Cody, Jared, Ryan; 13 great- grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. BENEDICT, Joseph “Aronhientha” – March 13, 1921~April 16, 2016. Joe was a hard worker, a young entrepreneur in the art of lacrosse stick making and playing music. He was a phenomenal fiddler who played at many weddings in Akwesasne and at local bars in the area. He was a farmer who raised farm animals and gardens full of fruit and vegetables for years. He worked at the old Lacrosse Factory and later opened up his own shop and supplied Akwesasne, Oka and Kahnawake with wooden lacrosse sticks of his own. He was inducted into the Akwesasne Lacrosse Hall of Fame on October 11, 2002 for taking pride in the game of lacrosse that the creator gave to us and the many years of lacrosse enjoyment that he gave to the community of Akwesasne. He was proud of his family and took pride in giving everybody nick names. He loved visitors and going for rides here and there. He loved his family, all the residents and nurses at Ikahihsohta Home for the Elderly and all the new friends he made there. Dear son of the late Silas Benedict and the late Catherine Tekakeirtha Jocko. Beloved husband of the late Mary Kawennahente Boots and the late Cecelia Gabriel. WINTERS, the Reverend Canon James Alvin - Born in Montréal, Quebec, on 20 December 1924; departed this life peacefully at home in Ottawa on 15 April 2016. Predeceased by his parents, Frank Winters and Hazel Vera James Winters; his cousins Frank Carey, Nora Carey Williams and Annemarie Harris Chaplin; and his close friends Cameron Cairns and Dorothy Eadie. Survived by his sister, Muriel Winters Britton, of Cornwall, Ontario; his nephew, Bill Britton and his wife Ethel; his niece Susan Anne Britton and her partner Mary Meldrum; his cousin Patricia Harris Bird; and many friends, relations, colleagues and parishioners. “Father Jim”, as he was known, entered holy orders as a deacon on 11 June 1951 and as a priest on 17 March 1952. His career in the Anglican Diocese of Ottawa began at the Church of St. Barnabas, Apostle and Martyr, as a curate under the mentorship of the Reverend Canon Herbert Brown. In 1955, Father Jim received his first appointment as Rector, to St. John’s, Vankleek Hill, returning to Ottawa in 1960 to become the first full-time chaplain at the Civic Hospital; he held that charge until 1967, when he was appointed Rector of St. Aidan’s. In 1978, Father Jim came back to St. Barnabas’, where he ministered as Rector until his formal retirement in 1990, and then for the rest of his life as Honorary Assistant and Rector Emeritus. Over the years, Father Jim took great delight in the blessings God gives his people: family and friends, good food and great music (especially opera), and always the splendor and comfort of the traditional Anglican liturgy. Visitation will be at St. Barnabas’ Church, 70 James Street, Ottawa, on Friday, 22 April, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. The Solemn Requiem Mass for the repose of Father Jim’s soul will be celebrated on Saturday, 23 April, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to St. Barnabas’ Church will be gratefully received. The family is particularly grateful to David Luxton for his many years of friendship and support, and his caring stewardship of Father Jim’s affairs.
