GUDELIS, Jonas In the early morning hours of August 1st, Jonas Gudelis passed away 28 days short of his 90th birthday. Born in Pasvalys, Lithuania, he had an idyllic childhood until the winds of WWII began to blow across Europe. He and his older brother Petras swam across the river to escape their now occupied country, then realized that one of them would have to return home to look after their widowed mother and four sisters. A coin was tossed and Jonas continued on, escaping certain death several times which led him to believe that he had an angel on his shoulder and that God walked with him every step of the way. After the war, Jonas married his German sweetheart Elfriede (Freda) Wolff in 1950 and the couple decided to make a new life for themselves in Canada, quickly settling in Cornwall where they found work, learned the language and then sponsored Freda’s sister Martha and her husband Pranas (Frank) Barkauskas into the country. Three children followed: Diana, Linda and Jonas (John), and eventually sons-in-law Ranny Shayler, Sean Adams and daughter-in-law Rachel (Martineau); a proud Opa to Trevor and Christie Shayler, Nikolai Adams, and Markus Gudelis. Years later, another sister, Katharina Zaczyk and her two children were also sponsored into the country to make a new life in Canada. Jonas was a kind, gentle and private man; sharp and curious till the very end; playing chess with the computer and taking apart appliances and electronic devices to see what made them work before re-assembling them. He could fix anything. He was our MacGyver. He built his two homes as well as a 24 foot pontoon boat which took up an enormous amount of space in our driveway for many years until completion. He spoke three languages fluently and could understand several more. He was a great dancer. He marvelled at the beauty and miracle of nature. He was his own healer. He saw God’s hand in everything. He stayed fiercely independent until the very end, walking into the arms of the EMT’s who laid him down so very gently in his own hallway where he likely died instantly, their supreme efforts unable to coax him back into this world. We would like to express our deep gratitude to the EMT’s who responded to the 911 call; to Allan Wilson of Wilson’s Funeral Home, whose empathy care and dedication will always be appreciated and remembered; to Father Kevin Maloney, whose prayers and words were a soothing balm to our aching hearts; and finally, to Sean Adams, who moved heaven and earth to give his father-in-law the perfect send-off. A private wake was held August 2nd at the Wilson Funeral Home followed by a Christian funeral service and burial at the St. Lawrence Valley Cemetery in Ingleside. ‘The record shows I took the blows- And did it my way!’ Will be eternally loved and remembered by the Gudelis family, the Zaczyk and Sauve families, the Shayler family and the Adams family. Until we meet again...
