CORNWALL, Ontario – The Agapè Centre’s One Bag Challenge has returned for a third year. The Agapè Centre is challenging residents to donate one bag of groceries to their food bank and then challenge five of their friends on social media.
Last year, the challenge wound up bringing in 998 bags for the Agapè Centre’s food bank. This year, the centre hopes to break the 1,000 bag mark.
Agapè Centre Executive Director Johanne Couture said that the food bank is particularly looking for food that is low in sodium and low in sugar.
“We serve so many seniors and people with health restrictions, we really appreciate donations of tomato sauce and soup of the low sodium variety,” Couture said. “We appreciate everything, but we really need canned protein.”
Couture explained that the centre usually gives out around 140 cans a week and that they serve around 1,450 individuals a month, which equals out to approximately 1,000 families.
Couture said she hoped that the donations from this fundraiser would carry them through to December.
“Donations are lower in the summer, financial donations are lower, but the need is constant,” she said.
The One Bag Challenge is ongoing throughout the month of August. Donations can be dropped off at the Agapè Centre at 40 Fifth St. West.
