WILLIAMSTOWN, Ontario – The 208th Williamstown Fair is upon us and for those who live in South Glengarry and grew up with the Fair it is like Christmas in August.
This much anticipated event draws members from around the community and beyond. Those who’s lives have taken them away to the city, will come back to relive that fair experience.
Fair President Michael Seguin says that the Fair has something for everyone.
“If you are thinking of attending for the first time this year I can assure you that there is something for everyone young and old,” Seguin writes in his welcoming message on the Fair’s website. “Although there is too much to list here in its entirety you will find livestock and equestrian shows, a midway and games, all kinds of food and beverage offerings, a children’s area with a petting zoo, various competitions and contests including tug-of-war, antique cars and tractors, musical entertainment, vendors and agricultural heritage displays. From the moment you arrive on the fairgrounds you will experience the rural agricultural way of life that is Glengarry.”
Returning this year, is a midway full of mechanical rides and games provided by World’s Finest Shows including their fun and thrilling Drop Zone ride.
After touring the Fairgrounds and the rides, guests can go next door and check out the Nor’ Westers Loyalist Museum which hosts the Fairs art contests every year. The museum will also be in Heritage Hall during the Fair. This year’s theme in Heritage Hall is the cheese factory, and the museum will be sharing their knowledge and artefacts.
This year as well will see Bev Runions, a past Secretary of the Fair sharing her recently completed book chronicling the Fair’s history over the past 40 years.
Bev will be I Heritage Hall at the Fair on Saturday, Aug. 10 starting at 2:30 p.m. signing copies of her book.
South Glengarry Mayor Frank Prevost feels that the Williamstown Fair is a testament to the Township’s volunteer spirit.
“The volunteers are who make this fair possible,” he said. “For them, the Fair isn’t just a weekend, it is year-round work.”
