LONG SAULT, Ontario – Inspired by family members and friends who have been affected by cancer, Marilyn Parisien decided to host a yoga-themed event on Saturday, April 27 in support of the Canadian Cancer Society of Cornwall, SDG and Prescott-Russel.

“I had some family members pass away, the last couple of years, and I wanted to honour them,” said Parisien. “A dear friend has also recently come down with cancer and we were chatting one day about her treatments and her drives to Ottawa, and the magnificent cost of getting there.”

After contacting the Canadian Cancer Society, Parisien learned that the average travel cost per person to reach treatment services is approx. $940. She explained that 80 per cent of proceeds raised from the event will go towards the Society’s Wheels of Hope transportation service program.

With upwards of 70 attendees, each donating a minimum of $50, Parisien was extremely satisfied with the turnout. Attendees were welcomed by instructors with yoga connection through drumming and body painting, followed by a 90 minute yoga practice and complimentary lunch. A silent auction was also available for participation.

“This event has been incredibly supported by SDG and Cornwall. We have had so much community support and I have to throw out a really big thank you to all of our sponsors and people who donated,” said Parisien.

Parisien, owner of Marilyn’s Aerobics for 30 years, said she has raised over $120,000 in donations throughout those years for organizations like the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Alzheimer Society and Lung Association.
