CORNWALL, Ontario – Akwesasne students of CCVS and T.R. Leger School of Adult and Alternative learning pitched business plans at an UCDSB Dragon’s Den spin-off, Eagle’s Nest, on Friday, April 18.

The 15 participating students delivered their ideas to a panel of judges from the Akwesasne Area Management Board (AAMB) for financial investment. Each individual was awarded with a completion bonus ranging from $50 to $500. The event strived to introduce students to entrepreneurship opportunities in the community.

Business ideas ranged from opening a local restaurant and arts consignment shop, to developing a drumming group and a greenhouse market, to developing wraps for food alternative to plastic and making and selling baskets. Akwesasne mentors supported students over the past six weeks, planing and developing their business models since the end of February.

“We are very proud of our students who pitched incredibly innovative business ideas, many of them reflective of Haudenosaunee culture and traditions,” said Gail BrantTerry, UCDSB Principal of Indigenous Education Programs. “We are thankful for our partnership with AAMB, as well as our mentors and judges who supported our students
at the event.”

The AAMB supports Akwesasne members through employment and training initiatives. To find out more about the AAMB, click here.
