CORNWALL, Ontario – Members of the African Caribbean International Association of Eastern Ontario (ACIAEO) are looking forward to community members attending their 2019 Black History Month celebration.

Hosted at the Centre Charles Emile-Claude, the free event will begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 23 and will be moderated by Mayor Bernadette Clement. Guests are asked to bring traditional foods of their culture to supplement a multicultural potluck experience.

“The more people we can get the better,” said Josianne Ngo Maa. “(Residents) can come enjoy good moments together, discover (Black History) for themselves and for our community.”

The event will feature speeches, discussion topics pertaining to black youth in Canada, traditional African dance and weeding as well as a fashion parade.

“It’s important to talk about Black History Month, talk about it in schools,” said Ngo Maa, reflecting on many black Canadians who founded our country and contributed to its successes.

Clement Gwanyama, past president and founder of ACIAEO, originally started the non-profit association in our region after moving to Canada 13 years ago. Gwanyama said it took him quite some time to adjust to the way of life in Canada. He wanted to bridge the learning gap for incoming immigrants so they do not struggle to find their way, as well as preserve and celebrate culture.
