CORNWALL, Ontario – Many roadways in the City of Cornwall are currently under construction, including major streets like Brookdale Ave., Pitt St. and Sydney St.

While some drivers may become impatient or distracted with wait times and temporary stop lights posed by these construction areas, disobeying the rules of the road in these zones could be met with steeper fines and demerit points.

The following graphs include information provided by CPS Communication Officer Stephanie MacRae on how local police may base their fines for speeding according to construction zone rules in the Highway Traffic Act (HTA). Speeding in a construction zone when workers are present results in double the amount of the fine and up to three or four demerit points.

Speeding – Construction Zone (S.128 of HTA)
Kilometres Set Fine
a) 1-19 kilometres per hour over the maximum speed limit $2.50 per kilometre
b) 20-29 kilometres per hour over the maximum speed limit $3.75 per kilometre
c) 30-49 kilometres per hour over the maximum speed limit $6.00 per kilometre
d) 50 kilometres per hour or more over the maximum speed limit No out of court settlement

Speeding – Construction Zone Worker Present
Kilometres Set Fine
a) 1-19 kilometres per hour over the maximum speed limit $5.00 per kilometre
b) 20-29 kilometres per hour over the maximum speed limit $7.50 per kilometre
c) 30-49 kilometres per hour over the maximum speed limit $12.00 per kilometre
d) 50 kilometres per hour or more over the maximum speed limit No out of court settlement

Not only will speeding through a construction zone result in potentially hefty fines, but disobeying a portable red light, or failing to stop for one could set motorists back $325 and three demerit points. Similarly, disobeying a traffic control stop sign could result in $110 and three demerit points.

If a motorist disobeys a traffic slow sign, fines of $110 could be given as well as up to three demerit points. Disobeying general signage may result in $110 fines and two demerit points.
