CORNWALL, Ontario – An intimate group of high school students enjoyed dinner and discussions with Mayor Bernadette Clement on Sunday, June 9 at the Agora Catholic Centre.
Event Organizer Debbie Plant, the Program Director of Youth and Young Adult Ministries with the Diocese of Alexandria-Cornwall, wanted to hold a Dinner with the Mayor evening after listening to Mayor Clement and Sue Stewart discuss their careers during International Women’s Day at the Civic Complex. Plant thought it would be the perfect opportunity for young adults, especially young women, who may be embarking on a path to post secondary education.
“I happen to think she’s a super role model,” said Plant about Mayor Clement. “I know it’s very important to those (students) who did come.”
Mayor Clement felt the intimate setting was perfect to engage with students on a more honest and comfortable level, and many opened up about social media and mental health.
“(Mental health) is obviously a huge concern in the adult community — we hear about it all the time — but it’s obviously on their minds as well. It’s very interesting to hear about the kind of services they have in their school and what they want to see,” said Mayor Clement.
Mayor Clement said the group also discussed Cornwall and how students feel there are not enough opportunities for youth in the community.
A lasagna dinner was provided and Robert Cote provided music for the evening.
