CORNWALL, Ontario – Mathieu Lamarche, 36, and Frederico Belmonte, 48, both of Cornwall, were arrested on May 8, 2019 and each charged with two counts of fraud under $5,000, as well as two counts of unlawful use of credit card. Mathieu Lamarche was also charged with two counts of breach of probation for failing to keep the peace. It is alleged on April 7, 2018, both men attended two local gas bars and approached customers, offering to use a credit card that did not belong to them to pay for their gas, in exchange for a lesser quantity of cash from the customer in return. Police were contacted and an investigation ensued. On May 8, 2019, a member of the Cornwall Police Service attended the Ottawa Carleton Detention Centre as both men were in custody. Both men were charged accordingly and held for a bail hearing.
