CORNWALL, Ontario – Ontario Provincial Police have charged a 27-year-old N.Y. State man in connection with a snowmobile accident on March 2, in which a man suffered fatal injuries.

Joseph James Thompson, of Hogansburg, N.Y., has been identified as the operator of the snowmobile that crashed on County Road 2 near 4th Line Road in South Glengarry.

South Glengarry resident Alex Miller was a passenger on the machine when it struck a pole. He lost his life.

The driver has been charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle causing death, exceeding 80 milligrams blood/alcohol content while operating a motor vehicle causing a fatality, and driving while disqualified (under a provincial suspension).

Thompson is scheduled to appear in an Alexandria court April 2.

This is the second fatal snowmobile accident in SDG over the last month that police are blaming on alcohol. The region was struck with another loss last night when South Glengarry resident Robert Gagnon lost control of his snowmobile in a fatal crash.

The case remains open as SD&G OPP officers, assisted by Technical Traffic Collision Investigators (TTCI), continue the investigation.
