CORNWALL, Ontario – The following is a compilation of Cornwall police briefs, where typical cop jargon is replaced with a more interesting point of view. All of the accused are innocent until proven guilty.

Dispute leads to charges

A 29-year-old Cornwall man is facing multiple charges for pushing and slapping his 31-year-old girlfriend.

The accused also broke her cell phone and threatened to have her jumped.

The incident allegedly happened on April 19, as the two were engaged in a heated argument.

On April 22, the local man attended police headquarters to deal with the matter.

He was charged with assault, threats, mischief, and breach of probation for being in the company of someone he has conditions not to and for failing to keep the peace.

The man was held for a bail hearing.

Montreal madness

A 19-year-old Montreal man who struck a 22-year-old woman in the face, also from Montreal, on April 22 at a local hotel, ended up spending the night behind bars.

He was held for a bail hearing after police arrived on the scene to make the arrest.

A recipe for trouble

A 35-year-old Cornwall woman is back behind bars for allegedly taking beef and chicken from a Ninth Street store on April 16.

Shawna Mitchell was charged with theft under $5000 and breach of undertaking for failing to keep the peace.

She was held for a bail hearing.

Five-finger discount – a tongue-in-cheek term for a crime that’s no laughing matter

This Cornwall woman won’t be receiving a warm welcome if she returns to a certain Brookdale Avenue store.

Police allege Amanda Laplante took an electric shaver on April 16, and fled the scene when a loss prevention officer attempted to stop her.

Police attended her residence on April 17, and charged her with theft under $5000, failing to keep the peace, and for attending a specific store despite being on conditions not to.

She was held for a bail hearing.

The deadly text message

Just because you can type it, doesn’t mean you should send it.

A 30-year-old Cornwall man allegedly sent a text message threatening to shoot his 25-year-old girlfriend, her friend, and her two dogs on April 15.

During their investigation, police located the man in the area and took him into custody.

He was charged with threats to life and breach of undertaking for failing to keep the peace.

The accused was held for a bail hearing.

Heated confrontation escalates into B&E charge

A 29-year-old Cornwall man, living at a local rooming house, forced his way into a 56-year-old’s room to confront him on an issue on April 17.

Police charged the man with break and enter.

He was held for a bail hearing.

Alleged ABM fraudster nabbed

A 57-year-old Cornwall woman is facing two counts of fraud and two counts of attempt fraud.

Police allege Corinne Vandusen deposited empty envelopes into an ABM on two occasions and withdrew money in May 2013; she was also unsuccessful on two other occasions.

On April 17, the woman attended police headquarters to deal with the matter.

She was released to appear in court at a later date.

One bad mistake leads to another

A 45-year-old Cornwall man found himself on the wrong side of the law on April 18.

Police allege the man pushed his 46-year-old girlfriend.

The accused was charged with assault, breach of a probation order for being out in public after having consumed alcohol and for failing to keep the peace.

He was held for a bail hearing.

Dialing up a storm

A conversation between two city residents went sour landing one man in handcuffs.

Police allege Luc Marion, 22, threatened to stab a 51-year-old man during a phone conversation on April 19.

He was charged with threats, and later released to appear in court on May 20.

Unpaid cab fare lands local man a free ride to jail

A 50-year-old Cornwall man learned the hard way to always pay (and tip) your cabbie.

Police allege Kelly Allen was intoxicated when he refused to pay his taxi fare on April 19.

He was arrested and charged with transportation fraud and breach of an undertaking and probation order for having consumed alcohol and failing to keep the peace as well as two other probation orders for failing to keep the peace.

The accused was held for a bail hearing.

When Johnny Law comes a knockin’, you better be home

A 30-year-old Cornwall man was nowhere to be found when city cops paid him a friendly visit.

Police allege they attended Steven Coleman’s residence to confirm he was abiding by his conditions, after being tipped off that he was MIA on April 19. City cops later located the man at a St-Felix Street address and took him into custody.

The accused was charged for having breached his conditional sentence order.

He was transported to police headquarters and held for a bail hearing.

Late-night trespasser nabbed

After a brief foot pursuit, police arrested a 47-year-old city man with ‘break-in tools’ in the early morning hours of April 20.

Police allege Gerald Poistras was spotted by an officer in the area of Montreal Road and St-Felix Street breaching his conditions.

He was charged with trespass by night, possession of break in tools, breach of an undertaking and probation order for failing to keep the peace and breach of a second undertaking for being out past curfew.

The accused was held for a bail hearing.

Crime doesn’t pay

A 60-year-old Cornwall man was arrested for a fraud he allegedly committed over a year ago.

Police allege Santhiralingam Savalingam fraudulently obtained money from a 50-year-old man he knew in February and March 2013.

On April 21, city cops attended the area of Vars as the OPP had the man in custody on the strength of Cornwall’s warrant.

He was transported to police headquarters, and released to appear in court at a later date.

CORNWALL POLICE BRIEFS: April 14- 16

THREATS

Cornwall, ON – Kim Masson, 54 of Williamstown was arrested on April 15th, 2014 and charged with threats. It is alleged that during the month of April, 2014 the man threatened to shoot a member of the Cornwall Community Police Service. As a result of the alleged threat an investigation ensued. On April 15th, 2014 during the course of the investigation the man was taken into custody at his residence by members of the OPP and turned over to the Cornwall Community Police. He was charged accordingly and held for a bail hearing.

ASSAULT, BREACH

Cornwall, ON – A 49-year-old Cornwall man was arrested on April 15th, 2014 and charged with assault and breach of probation for failing to keep the peace and being in the company of someone specific while under the influence of alcohol. It is alleged that on April 15th, 2014 the man who had been drinking was involved in a verbal argument his 45-year-old girlfriend when he punched her in the head. Police were contacted and an investigation ensued. During their investigation the man who was still in the area was taken into custody, charged accordingly and held for a bail hearing. His name was not released as it might identify the victim in the matter.

Cornwall, ON- A 16-year-old Cornwall youth was arrested on April 15th, 2014 and charged with assault and breach of probation and an undertaking for failing to keep the peace. It is alleged that on April 15th, 2014 the youth grabbed his foster brother by the collar and threw him to the ground. Police were contacted and an investigation ensued. During their investigation the youth was taken into custody, charged accordingly and held for a bail hearing. His name was not released as per provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

BREAK AND ENTER, BREACH, POSSESSION OF A CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE

Cornwall, ON – Gerald Poitras, 46 of Cornwall was arrested on April 14th, 2014 and charged with break and enter, possession of a controlled substance and breach of probation and undertaking for failing to keep the peace. It is alleged that on April 14th, 2014 the man removed a bicycle and a boom box from a First Street East garage. Police were contacted and while on route spotted the man in the area of First Street and Lawrence Avenue. He was taken into custody and during this time he was found to be in possession of what is believed to be a small quantity of cocaine. The man was charged accordingly and later released to appear in court on May 15th, 2014.

ASSAULT WITH A WEAPON, ASSAULT CAUSE BODILY HARM

Cornwall. ON – Mathew Beehler, 21 of Cornwall and Jamie MacDougall, 33 of Long Sault were arrested and charged with assault with a weapon and assault cause bodily harm. It is alleged that on March 29th, 2014 while at the Cornwall Civic Complex the two men threw items at an opposing hockey team member striking him in the head causing the player to suffer injuries requiring medical attention. Police were contacted and an investigation ensued. During their investigation both men attended police headquarters to deal with the matter. They were taken into custody, charged accordingly. Beehler was later released to appear in court on April 29th, 2014 while MacDougall was released to appear in court on May 15th, 2014.

FRAUD OVER $5000, UTTER FORGED DOCUMENT, ILLEGAL USE OF CREDIT CARD

Cornwall, ON – Robert Gravel, 51 of St-Hubert Quebec and Christopher Sarmadopoulus, 53 of Rosemont Quebec were arrested on April 14th, 2014 and charged with several fraud related offences. It is alleged that on November 14th, 2012 the two men attended a Cornwall business and purchased a quantity of construction equipment exceeding $5000 using a fraudulent credit card. Police were contacted and an investigation ensued. On April 14th, 2014 a member of the Criminal Investigation Division attended the Cornwall Courthouse as the two men were in custody on unrelated matters. They were both taken into custody, charged accordingly and returned to court staff to await a bail hearing.

POSSESSION OF PROPERTY OBTAINED BY CRIME

Cornwall, ON – Clarissa Square, 20 of Cornwall was arrested on April 14th, 2014 and charged with property obtained by crime. It is alleged that on March 27th, 2014 a break and enter occurred at a Leonia Street address and jewellery was reported missing. Police were contacted and an investigation ensued. During their investigation it was learned that the woman was in possession of the jewellery. On April 14th, 2014 police attended her residence, took her into custody and charged her accordingly. She was later released to appear in court at a later date.

ASSAULT

Cornwall, ON – A 47-year-old Cornwall woman was arrested on April 14th, 2014 and charged with assault. It is alleged that on April 14th, 2014 during an argument with her 51-year-old boyfriend she slapped him across the face. Police were contacted and an investigation ensued. On April 14th, 2014 the woman who attended police headquarters to deal with the matter was taken into custody, charged accordingly and later released to appear in court on May13th, 2014. Her name was not released as it might identify the victim in the matter.

THEFT UNDER $5000, BREACH

Cornwall, ON – Geoffrey Jarvo, 40 of Cornwall was arrested on April 15th, 2014 and charged with theft under $5000 and breach of probation for failing to keep the peace. It is alleged that in the early morning hours of April 15th, 2014 the man was spotted going through parked vehicles in the area of Champlain Drive. Police were contacted and an investigation ensued. During their investigation the man was located by police and taken into custody. He was charged accordingly and later released to appear in court on May 20th, 2014.

WARRANT

Cornwall, ON – A 21-year-old Cornwall woman was arrested on April 11th, 2014 on the strength of a warrant. It is alleged that on March 18th, 2014 the woman failed to attend court as required for a domestic related charge and a warrant was issued for her arrest. On April 11th, 2014 the woman was spotted by a Member of the Cornwall Community Police Service and taken into custody on the strength of the warrant. She was transported to police headquarters and held for a bail hearing. Her name was not released as it might identify the victim in the original matter.

THREATS, BREACH

Cornwall, ON – A 25-year-old Cornwall man was arrested on April 11th, 2014 and charged with threats and breach of two probation orders and one undertaking for failing to keep the peace. It is alleged that on April 11th, 2014 the man was involved in a verbal argument with his 21-year-old ex-girlfriend when he threatened to punch her in the head. Police were contacted and an investigation ensued. On April 11th, 2014 during their investigation police took the man into custody, charged him accordingly and held him for a bail hearing. His name was not released as it might identify the victim in the matter.

OVER 80

Cornwall, ON – Gregory Perrin, 53 of Ottawa was arrested on April 13th, 2014 and charged with over 80. It is alleged that the man was operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol when he was stopped at the port of entry. Police were contacted and assumed custody of the man. He was charged with over 80 and later released to appear in court on April 22nd, 2014.

BREACH

Cornwall, ON – A 19-year-old Cornwall woman was arrested on April 13th, 2014 and charged with breaching her undertaking for communicating with someone she has conditions not to and for failing to keep the peace. It is alleged that on April 13th, 2014 the woman was found to be in the company of the person for which she has conditions not to. She was taken into custody, charged accordingly and held for a bail hearing. Her name was not released as the matter stems from a domestic incident and might identify the victim in the matter.

ASSAULT

Cornwall, ON – A 27-year-old Cornwall woman was arrested on April 14th, 2014 and charged with assault. It is alleged that on April 13th, 2014 the woman was involved in a verbal argument with her 53-year-old boyfriend when she kneed him in the ribs and bit him on the wrist. Police were contacted and an investigation ensued. On April 14th, 2014 the woman who was still on scene was taken into custody, charged accordingly and held in custody for a bail hearing. Her name was not released as it might identify the victim in the matter.
