CORNWALL, Ontario – The following is a compilation of Cornwall police briefs, where typical cop jargon is replaced with a more interesting point of view. All of the accused are innocent until proven guilty.
Stealing from loved ones ends in cuffs for Cornwall woman
Police allege a 20-year-old Cornwall woman stole two rings and a necklace from her friend on February 12. The young adult was located by city cops later that day and taken into custody. During the arrest, police learned that she also stole money from her brother’s account. She was charged with two counts of theft under $5000, and later released to appear in court on March 20.
Arrested for alleged bank fraud
Police allege Cornwall resident Shawnna Chartrand, 21, used a bankcard that wasn’t hers to deposit empty envelopes into an account and withdraw money in January. The woman was located at a Sixth Street West address on February 12. She was taken into custody, and charged with possession of property obtained by crime, and two counts of fraud under $5000. She was later released to appear in court on March 20.
Breach leads to arrest
Police allege Cornwall resident Brandon Tessier, 27, failed to attend police headquarters for prints as required on January 7. The man attended police HQ to deal with the matter on February 11. He was arrested and charged with failing to attend for prints. The man was held for a bail hearing.
Cornwall man arrested for attacking his grandma
Police allege a 23-year-old Cornwall man slapped his 78-year-old grandmother in the face on February 10. During their investigation, the man was taken into custody, charged with assault, and failing to keep the peace. He was later released to appear in court on March 6. His name was not released to protect the victim.
Blade pulled in vicious argument
Police allege a 23-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman, both of Cornwall, were involved in a heated argument on February 10, when the man punched a hole in a door. The woman then allegedly punched the man in the head, and swung a knife at him. The man was charged with mischief while the woman was charged with assault, and assault with a weapon. The couple was held for a bail hearing.
Teen charged for communicating with ex-boyfriend
Police allege a 17-year-old Cornwall youth couldn’t resist visiting her ex’s workplace on February 8. City cops located her later that day at a McConnell Street address, took her into custody, and charged her with communicating with her ex-boyfriend despite being on conditions not to. She was also charged with two counts of breach of probation as she was bound by two separate probation orders to keep the peace. The teen was transported to police headquarters where she was held for a bail hearing. Her name was not released since he’s under 18.
Probation breach leads to arrest
Police allege Cornwall resident Jason Gougeon, 34, failed to report to his probation officer. City cops found him at a Marlborough street address on February 8 during a disturbing the peace call. While speaking with the man, police learned that a warrant was already in place for his arrest. He was taken into custody and later released to appear in court on March 14.
Busted for skipping school
Police allege a 17-year-old Cornwall youth was arrested for residing at a place not approved by his probation, and for failing to attend school on February 7. A warrant was issued for his arrest and later that day city cops located him at a Louisa Street residence. He was transported to police headquarters and released to attend court on March 13. His name was not released since he’s under 18.
Alleged drunken visit to police HQ leads to arrest
Police allege Cornwall resident Kathern Riviere, 51, was intoxicated when she attended police headquarters in regards to a non-emergency matter on February 7. She was charged for being outside her residence after having consumed alcohol, and failing to keep the peace. The woman was released, once she sobered up, to attend court at a later date.
Assault charge laid
Police allege a 30-year-old Cornwall man grabbed his 27-year-old girlfriend by the wrist and pushed her in August 2013. City cops were notified on February 7. The next day the man attended police HQ to deal with the matter. He was arrested and charged with assault. The accused was released to appear in court on March 4.
Cornwall man, 22, charged with assaulting 17-year-old girlfriend
Police allege a 22-year-old Cornwall man grabbed his girlfriend and pushed her back onto the couch during an argument on February 4. Three days later, city cops arrested the man at his residence, and charged him with assault. No names were issued to protect the victim.
Green Valley man arrested for allegedly forging documents
Police allege Green Valley resident Guillaume Girard, 40, wrote and deposited cheques from a closed account into an open account on twelve occasions, and then withdrew money between the months of March and July 2012. During the investigation, the man’s whereabouts were unknown and a warrant was issued for his arrest. City cops found their suspect with a little help from their colleagues in Ottawa, who already had the man in their custody on unrelated charges. He was transported to Cornwall and arrested on for twelve counts of fraud under $5000, and twelve counts of uttering forged documents. The man was held for a bail hearing.
Failing to change address leads to arrest
Police allege Cornwall resident Justin Dumont, 32, breached his probation order by failing to notify a change of address, failing to report as directed, and failing to attend scheduled appointments. City cops attended the Cornwall Court House on February 3 as the man was in custody on unrelated charges. Police executed a warrant for the man’s arrest and returned him to the custody of the courts to await a bail hearing.
Arrested for alleged B&Es
Police arrested Cornwall residents Michael Williams, 42 and Magdalena Williams, 32, for their alleged involvement in a pair of break and enters. The MacEwen gas bar located at Second Street and York Street was raided on Nov. 30, 2013. And the Beer Store located on Sydney Street was also ransacked on Dec. 18, 2013; an undisclosed amount of money was removed from both businesses. The Cornwall Criminal Investigation Division executed a warrant at a Bedford Street address on January 23 and arrested and charged Michael Williams with two counts of break and enter. Magdalena Williams was arrested and charged with two counts of possession of property obtained by crime. A third person is also being sought by police in relation to both break and enters. Michael Williams was held for a bail hearing and Magdalena Williams was released to appear in court at a later date.
Texting, Facebook messages lead to harassment charge
Police allege a 43-year-old Cornwall man repeatedly texted and sent Facebook messages to his 34-year-old ex-girlfriend in January, despite being told not to make any contact. The man was also seen near her workplace on several occasions. City cops spotted the man near Third Street and Pitt Street on January 30. He was taken into custody, charged with criminal harassment, and four counts of being within 100 meters of his ex-girlfriend’s work. The man was held for a bail hearing. No names were released to protect the victim.
Public mischief
Police allege Cornwall resident Andre Lemay, 58, lied during an investigation when he reported his car was stolen on January 30. He was taken into custody, charged with public mischief, and later released to appear in court on February 25.
Curfew breach lands Cornwall man in cuffs
Police allege Cornwall resident Tyler Bissonnette, 20, was at a Carleton Street address they attended on January 31, during an unrelated disturbance call. The problem: the man was past his curfew. He was taken into custody, charged with being out past curfew, and failing to keep the peace. The man was held for a bail hearing.
Failing to change address leads to arrest
Police allege they learned on January 29 that Christopher Tessier, 19, of Cornwall, moved and did not notify them. City cops attended the man’s new address the next day, took him into custody, and charged him with failing to notify a change of address, and failing to keep the peace. He was later released to appear in court on February 25.
Toronto police nab York man wanted in Cornwall
Police allege 30-year-old Cody MacDonald, of York, Ontario, failed to attend court for a theft-related charge on October 30, 2013. City cops found their suspect with a little help from their colleagues in southern Ontario, who already had him in custody for unrelated charges. Police travelled to Toronto on January 29 and apprehended the accused. He was held for a bail hearing.
Keeping bad company leads to arrest
Police allege a 24-year-old Cornwall woman was driving with the wrong passenger during a traffic stop in the area of Seventh Street and Brookdale Avenue on January 29. The woman was taken into custody and charged with communicating with someone she has conditions not to, and for failing to keep the peace. She was released with a future court date. Her name was not released as the probation order stems from a domestic incident and may identify the victim.
Two Cornwallites arrested for allegedly pocketing snack food
Police allege Cornwall residents Dakota Garlow, 27 and Julie Bilotta, 27, attempted to steal chicken wings, popcorn, jerky, Cheetos, and butter from a Ninth Street store on Jan. 17. Both were stopped by a loss prevention officer and after a brief struggle left the area in a vehicle, according to police. The woman attended police HQ on January 28 to deal with the matter and was charged with theft under $5000, and failing to keep the peace. She was released with a scheduled court date on February 20. The man attended police HQ on January 29 to deal with the matter and was charged with theft under $5000. He was released with a scheduled court date on March 6.
Failing to attend court for assault cop charge leads to arrest
City cops allege Noah Mitchell, 31 of Snye, Quebec, failed to attend court on October 17, 2011 for an assault police charge. The man attended police HQ to deal with the matter on January 29 and was arrested on the strength of a warrant. He was held for a bail hearing.
‘Hallway basher’ arrested
Police allege a 23-year-old Cornwall man caused damaged to the walls of his ex-girlfriend’s hallway after an argument on January 7. The man was spotted near Easton Avenue and Alice Street by police three weeks later and arrested. He was taken into custody and charged with mischief. The man was later released to appear in court February 25. No names were released to protect the victim.
Warrant leads to jail time
Cornwall resident John Sawatis, 34, was held in a jail cell before being transported to a correctional facility on January 27; after attending police HQ to deal with a probation violation warrant.
Monkland man arrested for trespassing
Police allege 26-year-old Christopher Deschambault, of Monkland, refused to leave a Belmont Street address while he was intoxicated on January 27. City cops arrived and asked him to scram, but the unwanted houseguest wouldn’t budge. He was taken into custody after a brief struggle and charged with trespass to property, and resist arrest. He was later released and is scheduled to appear in court on March 4.
Cornwall man, 49, arrested for assaulting 25-year-old girlfriend over cigarettes
Police allege a 49-year-old Cornwall man was arguing with his girlfriend, 25, over cigarettes on January 26 when he forcefully grabbed her wrist. He was taken into custody, charged with assault, and held for a bail hearing. No names were released to protect the victim.
Akwesasne man charged with sexual assault
Police allege a 42-year-old Akwesasne man grabbed his ex-girlfriend by the throat on two occasions, and sexually assaulted her on one occasion, in between December 2013 and January 2014. City cops located the man at a Bellamy Street address on January 26 and charged him with two counts of assault, and one count of sexual assault. He was transported to police headquarters and held for a bail hearing. No names were released to protect the victim.
Laval man allegedly skips taxi fare, steals cab driver’s cell
Police say 24-year-old Allen Tupper, of Laval, Quebec, took a cab driver on a crazy ride to the Seaway City on January 26. When it came time to pay, he asked to use the driver’s phone to contact his parents for the $273 fare. Police further allege he took the mobile device and fled the scene. The man was then spotted in the city by another cab driver and police were contacted and attended the location. The man was taken into custody, charged with transportation fraud, and theft under $5000. He was held for a bail hearing.
Montreal man arrested for harassment
Police allege 25-year-old Niaz-Ali Janjua, of Montreal, contacted a 48-year-old Cornwall man by way of phone despite having been told not to on December 14. The Montreal resident was found on January 25 at a Vincent Massey Drive address and taken into custody. He was charged with criminal harassment, and held for a bail hearing.
Traffic stop leads to drunk driving charge
Police allege 35-year-old Shawn Labelle, Cornwall, was driving under the influence of alcohol in the early morning hours of January 26 near Pitt Street and Tollgate Road. He was charged with impaired driving, and driving with more than 80 milligrams of alcohol in his blood. The man was taken into custody, and later released with a future court date.
Traffic stop leads to drunk driving charge, unruly passenger arrested
Police found a couple of live wires when they pulled over Cornwall residents Stephane Deguire, 29 and Tyler Bissonnette, 20, according to their blotter. City cops arrested the two men near Montreal Road and Prince Arthur Street on January 25. City cops allege Deguire was under the influence of alcohol. He was charged with impaired driving, and driving with more than 80 milligrams of alcohol in his blood. Police say Bissonnette was unruly during the traffic stop and resisted arrest once in custody at police HQ. He was charged with obstruct police, resist arrest, and failing to keep the peace. Both were later released with a future court date.
34-year-old man arrested for pushing girlfriend, damaging vehicle
During an argument at a McGregor Avenue residence on January 24, a Cornwall man allegedly ripped wires out of from under the hood of his 27-year-old ex-girlfriend’s vehicle, before pushing her. City cops located the man shortly after and charged him with assault, and mischief under $5000. He was held for a bail hearing. No names were released to protect the victim.
Failing to attend court for drug charges leads to arrest
Cornwall resident Stephanie Lynch, 24, was arrested on January 24 on the strength of a warrant. City cops spotted her near Glengarry Boulevard and Second Street. Police allege she failed to attend court for drug-related charges ten days earlier. The woman was later released and is scheduled to appear in court on February 20.
40-year-old man arrested for allegedly stealing steak and chicken
Police allege Cornwall resident Jonathan Deruchie lifted several packages of steak and chicken from a Ninth Street store on January 24. He was stopped by a loss prevention officer and held until police arrived. The man was taken into custody and transported to police HQ. City cops further allege several other items belonging to a neighbouring store were in his possession. He was charged with two counts of theft under $5000, and later released to appear in court on February 20.
27-year-old man arrested for alleged public intoxication, weed found
Cornwall resident Ryan Akins was charged with being intoxicated in a public place, and possession of marijuana, on January 23. He was released with a future court date.
