CORNWALL, Ontario – The following is a compilation of Cornwall police briefs, where typical cop jargon is replaced with a more interesting point of view. All of the accused are innocent until proven guilty.
Assault-related charges
A 46-year-old Cornwall man has been charged with assault, mischief and four counts of breach of recognizance for having consumed alcohol, not notifying a change in address, communicating with someone he has conditions not to as well as failing to keep the peace.
Police allege that on March 23 the man had been out drinking with his ex-girlfriend which he has conditions not to associate with when an argument took place. During the argument the man allegedly pushed his ex-girlfriend and tore her shirt.
Police were contacted and an investigation ensued. On March 27, the man attended police HQ to deal with the matter. He was arrested and held for a bail hearing. His name was not released as it might identify the victim in the matter.
Assault leads to arrest
A 27-year-old Cornwall man has been charged with assault with a weapon and failing to keep the peace.
Police allege the man was involved in a verbal argument with his 24-year-old common law wife when he threw a toy at her striking her in the leg. He then allegedly damaged the outside door.
Police were contacted and an investigation ensued. City cops arrested the man on March 27 and held him for a bail hearing. His name was not released as it might identify the victim in the matter.
Grocery store theft
Cornwall residents Shawna Mitchell, 35 and Ashley Gagnon, 20, have been charged with theft under $5000 and two counts of possession of stolen property. Mitchell was also charged with failing to keep the peace.
Police allege that during a traffic stop on March 27 at an east end grocery store parking lot, the two women had stolen meats and beauty products from three different stores. They were arrested on spot.
Mitchell was held for a bail hearing. Gagnon was released to appear in court on April 29.
B&E, robbery-related arrest
Cornwall resident Derek Mayer, 31, has been charged with break and enter, robbery, and failing to keep the peace.
Police allege the charges stem from an incident that occurred on March 11 at a Carleton Street address, where another man was charged.
The man attended police HQ on March 25 to deal with the matter. He was arrested and held for a bail hearing.
A caper is laced with irony
Cornwall resident Shawna Chartrand, 21, was arrested on the strength of a warrant.
City cops allege that the woman failed to attend court on March 20. Police found the woman in the Cornwall Courthouse on March 25. She was there on unrelated matters.
The woman was arrested, and later released to appear in court on April 17.
Telephone threat
Sound advice that a local man could’ve benefitted from: don’t get hung up on leaving threats on other people’s answering machines.
Cornwall resident Ryan Meek, 30, has been charged with threats to cause bodily harm.
Police allege that on March 24 the man left a message threatening to throw a 41-year-old woman down the stairs if she was to return to his residence.
The police were notified and an investigation ensued. City cops attended the man’s residence on March 25, and arrested him. The man was taken into custody, and later released to appear in court on April 17.
Assault-related arrest
A 23-year-old Cornwall woman has been charged with threats to life and assault.
Police allege she pushed her 24-year-old ex-boyfriend and threatened to kill him on March 25.
City cops arrested the woman later that day, and held her for a bail hearing.
Senior charged for allegedly threatening and assaulting his wife
An 83-year-old Cornwall man has been charged with assault and threats.
Police allege he threatened to kill his 83-year-old wife, and grabbed her by the neck in the month of March 2014.
The man was arrested on March 25 and taken into custody. He was later released to appear in court on April 22.
Funny money
Passing counterfeit cash around the city didn’t pay off for an Oxford Mills resident.
Police allege 32-year-old Brian Workman gave local businesses counterfeit money on two separate occasions this March, mostly $100 American bills.
City cops attended the Cornwall Courthouse on March 25 as the man was in custody on an unrelated matter.
He was charged and the man remained in custody for a bail hearing.
Sexual assault charge
Akwesasne resident Tate Jocko, 24, is facing a sexual assault charge.
Police allege that on February 28 while at a friend’s residence the man inappropriately touched a 34-year-old woman.
City cops were contacted and an investigation ensued. On March 26, the man attended police HQ to deal with the matter. He was taken into custody, and later released to appear in court on April 22.
Father charged with allegedly sexually assaulting daughter
A 36-year-old Cornwall man has been charged with with several sex related offences.
Police allege that the man sexually assaulted his 17-year-old daughter on three separate occasions during 2013.
City cops were contacted and an investigation ensued. On March 26, the man attended police HQ to deal with the matter.
He was taken into custody, and later released with a court date of April 29. His name was not released as it might identify the victim in the matter.
Domestic violence leads to arrest
A 25-year-old Cornwall woman is facing multiple charges for allegedly pointing a knife at her 42-year-old common law husband and striking him several times. The woman also allegedly damaged a door frame during the argument.
She was arrested March 26 and charged with assault, assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon, and mischief.
The woman’s name was not released as it might identify the victim in the matter.
