The following is a compilation of Cornwall police briefs, where typical cop jargon is replaced with a more interesting point of view. All of the accused are innocent until proven guilty.
Breach
Police allege a 16-year-old Cornwall youth was not at his residence on Nov. 11, when police were in attendance on an unrelated matter and found the youth was out past curfew. On Nov. 12, the youth attended police headquarters. He was charged with breach of a recognizance for being out past curfew and breach of probation for failing to keep the peace. The youth was held for a bail hearing. His name was not released as per the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
Fail to attend prints
Police allege Wade Harris, 28, Akwesasne, failed to attend for prints on Oct. 24. On Nov. 12, the man attended police headquarters to deal with the matter. He was taken into custody and released to attend court on Nov. 26.
Warrant
Police allege Ernest Corbiere, 37, Williamstown, failed to attend court on October 29. On Nov. 12, the man attended police headquarters to deal with the matter. He was taken into custody and transported to court for a bail hearing.
Domestic assault
Police allege a 21-year-old Cornwall man was in a verbal argument with his 20-year-old girlfriend while at her residence on Nov. 6, when he grabbed her by the throat and punched her in the eye. On Nov. 12, he turned himself in and police charged him with assault. He was held for a bail hearing. His name was not released as it might identify the victim in the matter
Assault causing bodily harm
Police allege 48-year-old Cornwall man struck his 45-year-old girlfriend at her residence causing her to lose a tooth on Nov. 11. The man was taken into custody and charged with assault cause bodily harm. His name was not released as it might identify the victim in the matter.
Breaches
Some people don’t mesh well with moderation. Police allege Gerard Cook, 50, Cornwall, attempted to purchase alcohol at a local store on Nov. 11, was refused and police were contacted given his level of intoxication. Police spotted the man and during their investigation observed him to be intoxicated. He was charged with breaching his probation for having consumed alcohol and failing to keep the peace. He was transported to police headquarters and later released with a future court date.
Trying to argue with a taxi driver about cab fare landed a local man in hot water. On Nov. 9, police were called to a Second Street west address because a taxi driver was having issues getting his money from a male customer. Upon police arrival an odour of alcohol was detected on the man. Police have charged Mark Tyo, 40, Cornwall, with breaching a recognizance for having consumed alcohol. He was transported to police headquarters and held for a bail hearing.
Being a homebody can pay off when it comes to the law. Police allege Emily Pollock, 34, Winchester, racked up a slew of charges when police found her hiding out at a Duncan Street address in Cornwall on Nov. 8. She was charged with breaching her probation order for failing to keep the peace and not following house rules. She was also charged with breaching a recognizance for being within the city of Cornwall without surety and for being away from her residence. She was transported to police headquarters and held for a bail hearing.
Bad habits die hard. Police allege Steven Doychack, 41, Cornwall, was spotted by a uniformed officer at the beer store on Nov. 8. During their investigation police attended the man’s residence, took him into custody and charged him breaching his recognizance for having been where alcohol was being sold. He was transported to police headquarters and held for a bail hearing.
Bad idea: Mule kicking a cop
Getting a leg up on the competition isn’t always sound advice. Police allege Shelly Michaud, 23, Cornwall, was intoxicated when she punched an officer in the chest on Nov. 8. The woman was taken into custody and during the arrest she mule kicked another officer in the thigh. The whole thing started when police were dispatched to a disturbance on Hamilton Crescent. She was charged with two counts of assault police. She was later released with a future court date.
PunchFest 2013
After trying to escape via taxi cab, police allege Clayton Delorme, 28, Cornwall, punched a 44-year-old man in the head and later kicked him in the head. He also punched a 50-year-old man once. The incidence took place on Nov. 9. While at the police station later that day the man resisted police and refused to cooperate while being lodged. Delorme was charged with three counts of assault and resisting police. He was held in custody for a bail hearing.
Assault charges
A 25-year-old Cornwall man is facing an assault charge for allegedly applying pressure to his 23-year-old’s girlfriend’s throat while she was laying down between the dates of Dec. 18, 2012 and Dec. 24, 2012. Police were later contacted to investigate an unrelated matter and established grounds for the man’s arrest. On Nov. 8, the man attended police headquarters to deal with the matter. He was taken into custody and then released with a future court date. His name was not released as it might identify the victim in the matter.
Early Halloween drinking lands man in jail cell
Before Halloween even had a chance to kickoff, one local man already had one too many, according to the law. Police allege Martin Gauthier-Newton, 20, Cornwall, was found to be under the influence of alcohol during a routine traffic stop in the early morning hours of Oct. 31. He was charged with breaching an undertaking for having consumed alcohol. Gauthier-Newton was transported to police headquarters and held for a bail hearing.
Warrant
Kayla Clute, 23, Hogansburg, N.Y., was in breach of a conditional sentence order when she attended Cornwall police HQ on Oct. 30, to deal with the matter. She was taken into custody and held for a bail hearing.
Punch-drunk love
Police allege a 21- year-old Cornwall woman was involved in a verbal argument with her 22-year-old boyfriend on Oct. 29, when she punched him in the face. She was taken into custody and charged with assault. The woman was later released with a future court date. Her name was not released as it might identify the victim in the matter.
Construction site targeted for theft
Police allege Kellen Sunday, 29, Cornwall, attended a McConnell Street construction site on Oct. 29, and removed various metal without permission. Police were contacted, and the man was spotted walking on McConnell Avenue by police. He was charged with theft under $5000 and released with a future court date.
Domestic assault charges
A 44-year-old Cornwall man was arrested on Oct. 28, for multiple assault charges against his 47-year-old girlfriend. The police allege the following: In April, the man pushed her into a railing causing a cracked rib. In June, he punched her in the face, chest and arms then kicked her in the head. On Oct. 28, during an argument the man punched his girlfriend in the head then pulled the phone out of the wall when she called police. Police attended the residence and took him into custody. He was charged with two counts of assault, assault cause bodily harm and mischief. The man was then held for a bail hearing. His name was not released as it might identify the victim in the matter.
Halloween costume bandits caught red-handed
During Halloween season sometimes it’s a better idea to treat instead of trick. Police allege Lindsay Archambault, 19 and Brandon Bush, 21, both of Cornwall attended a Brookdale Avenue store and attempted to remove Halloween costumes and a cop badge without paying for them. Staff members confronted the couple and contacted police. During their investigation police took both into custody and charged them with theft under $5000, and the woman also faced an additional charge of breaching an undertaking for failing to keep the peace. Both were given a future court date.
Moped damaged in lovers’ quarrel
When love hits the fan, not even motorized scooters are safe. Police allege a 47-year-old Cornwall woman showed up at her 50-year-old ex-boyfriend’s house on Sept. 27, and threatened to damage his car. As if that wasn’t enough drama, she kicked over his moped causing minor damage. On Oct. 28, she was located at her residence, taken into custody and charged with mischief, threats and breach of probation for failing to keep the peace. She was then held for a bail hearing. Her name was not released as it might identify the victim in the matter.
Warrants
Cameron Brassard, 51, Cornwall, missed his court date on Oct. 24. He turned himself in on Oct. 28, at Cornwall police HQ and was held for a bail hearing.
Jordan Benedict, 27, Akwesasne, was taken into custody by customs officials attempting to enter the port of entry on Oct. 28. He was wanted for driving offences. Benedict was turned over to Cornwall police and transported to Ottawa where he was held in custody.
Michael Leaf, 38, Akwesasne, missed his court date on Feb. 27, 2007. He was arrested by Akwesasne Mohawk Police for an unrelated matter and was later turned over to Cornwall police for the warrant to be dealt with. Leaf was taken into custody and held for a bail hearing.
Bad brother gets arrested
Brotherly love is not always a given. Police allege a 23-year-old Cornwall man pushed his sister on Oct. 28, and took a metal bar and smashed the window on her door. The man then threatened to stab his sister if money was not loaned to him. He booked it from her house but was spotted walking on Second Street near Nick Kaneb Drive. He was taken into custody and charged with mischief under $5000, threats, assault and breach of a probation order for failing to keep the peace. His name was not released as it might identify the victim in the matter.
Sucker punch over parking spot
Finding a good parking space is no joke. Police allege Karen Papineau, 51, Cornwall, was involved in an argument with a man over a parking matter on Oct. 27, when she punched him in the face. She was charged with assault, breach of probation and undertaking for failing to keep the peace. She was taken into custody and later released with a future court date.
Impaired driver stopped on Second and Amelia Streets
Police allege Cory Rocheleau, 24, Lancaster, was found to be operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol in the early morning hours of Oct. 27. He was stopped during a routine traffic stop in the area of Second Street at Amelia. Rocheleau was charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle. He was taken into custody and later released with a future court date.
15-year-old charged with trafficking
When police arrived at the scene of a disturbance call on Oct. 26, at a Baldwin Street residence, they encountered a group of fleeing teens. One youth was found hiding under a vehicle. A search through his backpack revealed more than just homework. A quantity of marijuana was found at a street value of $413. A 15-year-old Cornwall youth was charged with possession of a controlled substance, possession for the purpose of trafficking and property obtained by crime. The youth was later released with a future court date. His name was not released as per provision of the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
