CORNWALL, Ontario – A community garden project, for residents of Hamilton Crescent, ended its season with a harvest workshop on Tuesday.

In celebration of all the hard work over the summer, the project’s lead volunteer, Diana Freeman, of Wild Rose Organic Farm, prepared a variety of delicious treats for the children to try, using the fruits of their labour, including beet muffins and chips. The workshop also included a demonstration how to use dried herbs in cooking, pickling and saving seeds for planting next year.

Participants also helped put together a cookbook of healthful recipes using produce from their garden.

Funded by the United Ways’ Success by Six and  supported by Rachel’s Kids, the project aims at teaching children about gardening, health and nutrition in a fun and hands-on way.

The project in its third year, provided, to those interested, 19 garden plots and 18 garden boxes on a first come first served basis, said Corrie D’Alessio of the Seaway Valley Community Health Centre, which leads the program in association with the Cornwall Housing Corporation.

“Testing out the waters,” said D’Alessio, this year the project was expanded to residents of the Lemay Street housing complex, with five gardening boxes.
