Lighting fixture manufacturer closing, dozens left jobless

CORNWALL, Ontario – A lighting fixture manufacturer in Cornwall’s industrial park will close its doors within months, leaving as many as 190 people out of work.

Canlyte, a division of Philips Electronics located on Education Road in Cornwall, will shutter in about 11 months.

Canlyte is a leading manufacturer and supplier of lighting fixtures and services.

Santina Giuliano, communications manager for Philips Canada, told Seaway News the decision is related to economics.

“As an outcome of market changes in the global lighting industry, and in order to improve operational efficiencies, Philips has decided to phase out manufacturing at its Cornwall facility,” she said. “Reductions in the workforce are always a difficult decision.”

Giuliano said employees were notified of the decision Thursday and social media posts are already reflecting the move, as employees have lept to Facebook and Twitter to announce the closure.

Giuliano said positions will be eliminated over the next 11 months as production at the Cornwall plant is reduced.

Termination arrangements are being set up with individual employees.
