Local Catholics losing Bishop Damphousse to Sault Ste. Marie

CORNWALL, Ontario – Local Catholics will be getting a new bishop as the Vatican has announced a change.

Pope Francis announced Thursday Bishop Marcel Damphousse is moving to Sault Ste. Marie to assume responsibilities there in a media release.

A succession plan for the Diocese of Alexandria-Cornwall was not announced by the Holy See.

Damphousse was Rector of the Saint-Boniface Cathedral in Manitoba when, on June 28, 2012, Pope Benedict XVI named Damphousse Bishop of Alexandria-Cornwall.

Damphousse succeeds Bishop Jean-Louis Plouffe who retired upon reaching the age of 75, as required by the Code of Canon Law.

More to come.
