CORNWALL, Ontario – A new splash pad has been officially opened in South Stormont.
The township held a grand opening this week. The Arnold Bethune Memorial Park, located on Simcoe Street, is now home to a new 3,500 square foot animal themed facility with nine water features and an additional 11 ground features.
“The facility was carefully designed to try and offer a variety of exciting play opportunities for all age groups and abilities; I believe that we have accomplished that goal”, said Kevin Amelotte, South Stormont Parks and Recreation Supervisor. “The addition of this splash pad is a perfect compliment to this popular community park that has seen a complete re-design since 2010.”
The park is also home to a wading pool, ball diamond, play structure, outdoor rink, and multiple soccer fields. The splash pad is open daily from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and is controlled by an activation button that starts a new 4 minute cycle every time it is pushed by a user.
Among those present at the ceremony were members of South Stormont council and staff, MP Guy Lauzon, members of the splash pad fundraising committee, and an elementary class from Longue Sault Public School representing the Parent Teacher Association. The association assisted with fundraising efforts in 2013.
“There has been a strong commitment from xouncil to extend the life of our current recreation facilities and to provide upgraded amenities for both residents and visitors,” said South Stormont Mayor Bryan McGillis. “We thank the Government of Canada and all the local sponsors that partnered with us to make these projects a reality; it is with their help that these upgrades are completed today.”
There were other improvements too. Upgrades to the Long Sault Arena included a new roof, dehumidifier, energy efficient lighting, front doors and spectator protective netting while the St. Andrews West Pool was retrofitted with new pool lines, heaters, pumps, filters, washrooms and deck.
The three projects represent a total investment of nearly $500,000 since the start of construction in April 2013.
