CORNWALL, Ontario – Maxville is going to the dogs this month – quite literally.

The first ever K9 Sport Fest will take place at the famed Maxville Fairgrounds July 18 and 19.

Think of it like a mini-Olympics for our four-legged friends, with everything from agility training to frisby catching, dock jumping and sheep herding.

Event organizer Erika Anderson said K9 Sport Fest is not only a way for dog-sporting enthusiasts to get together, but also an opportunity to grow awareness around the activity.

“We wanted to celebrate the dog sporting events at one location,” she said. “And we want to introduce a lot of the sports to people who might not know about them.”

Turns out, said Anderson, there are dozens of local dog owners who train their pets for such events in top-level competitions.

Her own competition dog, a six-year-old border collie named Fae, has placed first in several competitions, said Anderson, and has competed at national events.

“It’s a very family friendly festival,” said Anderson.

Spectators for K9 Sport Fest pay $5 for admission at the gate. Children under 10 enter free.
