ALEXANDRIA, Ontario – Dozens came out to the Glengarry Trails on Saturday, May 4 to plant 200 trees in memory of loved ones.

This was the third year for the event which began after David MacDonald, Munro & Morris Funeral Homes Manager/Funeral Director, approached the Raisin Region Conservation Authority (RRCA) about jointly hosting a memorial tree planting day. “The trees serve as a living legacy for generations to come while making a positive environmental impact.”

“After someone has passed away, a tree can represent rebirth and a living tribute to their loved one that will last many lifetimes,” said MacDonald.

The Township of North Glengarry partnered for the event and offered land on Lakeshore Dr. as a spot where the trees could be planted.

“This lasting tribute, which honours loved ones who have passed away in the past year, will help to create a legacy that will be enjoyed by many future generations of our residents,” said North Glengarry Mayor Jamie MacDonald.

The RRCA provided the trees and helped guide the participants in the planting process.

“There are various open fields at or near the Glengarry Trails.  Every year, we determine which trees are most suitable for each site based on the drainage and soil type and guide the participants on how and where to plant the trees,” said Normand Génier, RRCA Forestry Specialist.
