CORNWALL, Ontario – A U.S. prison escapee has reportedly been captured by police a relative stone’s throw from Cornwall.
U.S. media are reporting that David Sweat was captured by authorities in Constable, N.Y. less than nine kilometres from the Canadian border and just a short drive from the Seaway City.
The New York Times is reporting that Sweat was shot, but his status is unclear.
Richard Matt, 49, the other escaped prisoner, was shot three times in the head when he was confronted by authorities on Friday near the town of Malone, N.Y., about 43 kilometres northwest of the prison.
Both men escaped a maximum-security prison in Northern New York State weeks ago and hundreds of law enforcement officers were on their trail.
Constable is just 45 km from Cornwall.
Sweat has reportedly been taken to a Malone, N.Y. hospital for treatment.
More to come.
