CORNWALL, Ontario – Call it the nightmare before Christmas as parts of Cornwall and area are experiencing outages as gusty winds flew into the region.

Cornwall Electric restored power to the eastern reaches of the city Thursday afternoon and Cornwall Island shortly thereafter. They reported no further interuptions.

But things are different in the United Counties.

Hydro One, the provincial utility, is reporting multiple outages across the province. At last word many areas of SD and G were powerless.

The Christmas Tree in the centre of Alexandria was toppled by wind and blocking Main Street at Mill Square.

Hydro One said as many as 7,500 customers were without power in SD and G. Power may not be restored in those areas until midnight, or well into Christmas Day.

At county roads 31 and 43 multiple hydro poles were down, which forced the closure of the intersection.

Winds gusted to about 80 km/h Thursday afternoon, said The Weather Network, but have since died off.

Christmas Day conditions are expected to be less ferocious.
