UPDATE: Power back on in Snye, St. Regis

CORNWALL, Ontario – Power has been restored to Snye and St. Regis in Akwesasne.

Late Wednesday night crews from Hydro Quebec were able to repair infrastructure that had failed at about 2:30 p.m.

Regina Jacobs, Akwesasne’s emergency measures officer, said warming centres helped some residents who had to grapple with no power on what was the coldest night of winter so far.

She had not heard of any residents involved in an emergency situation, or anything like pipes freezing.

“We all have power,” she said.

The Hydro Quebec outages forced the First Nation to open schools as warming centres as the region goes into a deep freeze.

Akwesasne issued a statement Wednesday confirming the situation.

Power had been out in parts of Akwesasne since Quebec Hydro infrastructure failed earlier on its main grid.

The mercury dove to minus 25 Wednesday night, with windchills that make it seem more like minus 30 or colder.

Hydro Quebec officials were not readily available for comment.
