CORNWALL, Ontario – The pitfalls of online dating make for a hilarious ride in Cornwall filmmaker Shaun Savard’s new web series ‘Mustang Sally.’
The full-length pilot episode, from Playmaker Studios, is top heavy with local talent in leading and secondary roles.
The title character, played by Cornwall-native Sally Prosser, is an eligible 20-something with a long list of dating mishaps. She gets little help from her misguided roommate Julie (played by Montreal’s Jaren Cerf).
“Mustang Sally is a new-age comedic adventure into the reality of online dating,” said Savard. “The audience can definitely expect something they haven’t seen before.”
In order to complete all 10 episodes of the first season, Savard is crowd funding on Kickstarter. A slew of perks including DVDs, T-shirts, and a walk-on role are available with each pledge.
“Crowd funding allows us to up the quality of production, and actually pay the people involved,” he said. “Every little bit helps and that’s what we need to make this work.”
Guest appearances from Sue Stewart, Corus radio talent, Jamie Carr, narrator of Come Dine With Me Canada, actor Joel Lefebvre, and Nate Gignac, guitarist for LA-based Dead Heroine give the web series a real Seaway City vibe; even the Cornwall Fire Station on Pitt Street makes a cameo.
Savard is no rookie to the local or national film scene. He grabbed the attention of Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) critics during their submission process last year with ‘Test of a Man.’
His production company Playmaker Studios, which started in ’03 with wedding videos and photography, has since branched out into documentaries, and now a web series.
“Playmaker has a lot of momentum right now. With the right mix of talent, luck, and support we just might make a huge impact,” said Savard.
