CORNWALL, Ontario – On Thursday, Aug. 15, Cornwall Sexual Assault Support Services for Women of Cornwall, SD&G and Akwesasne (SASS) held their fifth annual Chalk the Walk summer BBQ and also celebrated their 25th year of operation.
“We’ve opened the doors to the public today so they can come and learn a little more about who we are and what we do,” said Angela Vinet, Executive Director of SASS.
Chalk the Walk is an annual event held in many communities across Canada that encourages people to write positive messages on the sidewalk in chalk.
The event at SASS had chalk, face painting and food from M&M Meat Shop in Cornwall served up by members of the Cornwall Police Service.
“We provide a warm and comfortable space for clients to come and receive counselling and heal,” said Vinet. “We also work to teach the general public about what sexual violence and consent is.”
Last year, SASS provided over 3,000 hours of counselling to 982 clients. They also held 86 public education events that reached nearly 3,000 members of the community.
