The St. Lawrence River Institute’s hands-on environmental education workshops for students get a boost with a donation of $2,000 from Cornwall Electric.

The River Institute’s environmental education workshops provide educational experiences that motivate, encourage and inspire young people to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields. Students engage with River Institute scientists in the lab and in the field to learn about topics such as fish ecology, aquatic invertebrates, and water quality. The River Institute’s education workshops offer a unique opportunity to use the St. Lawrence River ecosystem as study site, both outdoors and in the classroom.

“We’re grateful for Cornwall Electric’s ongoing support of our environmental education workshops,’’ said Cristina Charette, Education Coordinator at the River Institute. “The funding we receive for these workshops enables us to continue to provide engaging, hands-on learning experiences to students and teachers in our community.”

“Cornwall Electric is very pleased to present this donation in support of the area youth pursuing careers in the STEM fields,” says Jackie Baird, Regional Manager, Cornwall Electric. “Young professionals who have studied in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics are the future leaders for companies like Cornwall Electric and we are proud to contribute to their development”.

The River Institute was established in 1994 as a unique community partnership involving the City of Cornwall, the Mohawks of Akwesasne, government, education, business and industry. Its mandate is environmental research and education with a focus on the Great Lakes / St. Lawrence River ecosystem. As a non-profit charitable organization, the River Institute raises its own funds for all essential costs, including salaries, administration, overhead, and operations. Grants, sponsorships, and donations provide specific funding for research and special projects, together with unrestricted contributions from individual donors and River Champions.
