CORNWALL, Ontario – No charges have been laid against a city bylaw enforcement employee who allegedly drove past a school bus which had its lights flashing and “stop” arm down – and the driver could escape such punishment completely.

The Cornwall Community Police Service today said the decision not to lay charges came after a “full investigation.”

“At this point there is a lack of evidence to proceed (with charges),” said Const. Dan Cloutier. “Therefore the investigation is under abeyance until more evidence becomes available.”

This comes in spite of the fact that a video of the incident has been circulated, and the driver has admitted to the infraction.

Cloutier said that given the attention the matter has drawn, the service is doing its best to assure that it is dealt with accordingly.

The alleged infraction on Ninth Street just west of Pitt Street last month was captured on video by a resident. The video was posted on the internet.

City hall said the driver admitted his error and was disciplined. Citing confidentiality rules, the punishment has not been made public.

CAO Norm Levac said the city notified police soon after the bylaw office became aware of the alleged incident.
