Highway 401 westbound down to one lane after fatal collision

CORNWALL, Ontario – A 61-year-old Etobicoke man died following a single motor vehicle collision on Highway 401, west of the Moulinette Road exit in South Stormont, Saturday afternoon.

SD&G OPP and emergency personnel are currently at the scene of the accident which occurred today at approximately 2:10 p.m.

A 2006 Chevrolet HHR travelling westbound carrying two occupants, the man and a 65-year-old Bradford woman, left the roadway, for reasons under investigation, and entered the median ending up on its side, according to provincial police.

The woman was airlifted to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The passing lane of Highway 401 westbound is closed and traffic is being directed into the driving lane in the area as police, assisted by OPP Technical Traffic Collision Investigators (TTCI) continue the investigation.

“It will be down for awhile. Probably be a few more hours,” said SD&G Const. Joel Doiron in a telephone interview with Seaway News at 5:50 p.m.
