CORNWALL, Ontario –Racing Against Drugs, an annual community-based drug and alcohol awareness program, aims at capturing the attention of grade six students across the district, through the sport of racing.
Making their way through a series of activity and information “pit stops” students were explained the effects of drugs and alcohol on the body and given the alternative of healthy lifestyle choices.
Among the “pit stops” students were given the opportunity to race miniature electric cars, with the purpose of making it around the track without crashing.
At the distortion booth, students are giving goggles which simulate impairment and asked to walk towards a car and unlock it.
Through a video and equipment display, the EMS booth, presented the life threatening results of drug and alcohol use and medical intervention.
Other community agencies involved included the Eastern Ontario Health Unit which presented information on tobacco; Centre de santé communautaire the l’Estrie with information about social media, peer influences and advertising; and Ministry of Natural Resources Conservation promoted safety tips on the operation of off-road vehicles.
The event which hosted hundreds of area students, was held from April 9 to 12, at the Armouries.
