BROCKVILLE, Ontario – The Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) announced that it addressed the school board’s $11.7 million deficit during a special board meeting on Wednesday, June 12.
In order to enable a balanced 2019-2020 budget, the Board said that it passed a motion to reduce $11.7 million from program support, school operations, school office administration, central office administration and special education. Additional information concerning finances will be presented to the Board by staff during the upcoming June 19 meeting, allowing trustees to confirm a final budget that will be sent to the Ministry of Education.
During the finalization of budget deliberations, Trustees were presented with a summary from Senior Business Consultant Roger Richard of recommendations that met the Ministry of Education’s obligations, setting out five guidelines, including: “commitment to a balanced budget, arriving at budget decisions that result in a minimal impact on the classroom to the greatest extent possible, alignment of expenditures with the actual revenues the Board receives from the province, seeking efficiencies in all areas of the Board’s operation, and implementing innovative practices wherever possible.”
While the Board said that reductions will prevail as part of its budget, it will continue to enhance Special Education spending beyond the current funding allocations for 2019-2020.
“Trustees passed a motion, amending the budget scenario by removing a reduction of $830,657 associated with Secondary Programming – Student Success Teachers and applying these reductions to the Special Education program line,” read a UCDSB statement.
