WaterFest: Dragon boat races fire up St. Lawrence River

By Adam Brazeau
CORNWALL, Ontario – Hundreds of people raced dragon boats in Cornwall Saturday.

The fifth annual Cornwall WaterFest invaded Lock 19 in the old Cornwall Canal to raise funds and awareness for the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Fourteen boats with glittery gold dragons baring their teeth rocketed down the canal on a 275-metre course, powered only by the sweat and grunting of teams of rowers.

In addition to the dragon boat races, over 20 local artists participated in the ArtFest portion of the event.

Meanwhile, on the WaterFest stage, musician Graham Greer and the Mandee Woods Band ignited the crowd, as Zumba with Chrystal and the MacCulloch Dancers got dozens of spectators on their feet.

More to come.
